Learn to Garden at the Flower Show!

Wednesday, March 5, 2008

Tourism Ireland and Celtic Gardens pooled their talents to create a "coming together of the old and the new," according to co-designer Matt Cullen.

The stonework appears to be ancient, but the environmentally friendly green roof on display is thoroughly modern. The extensive plant list for this display includes forsythia, coreopsis, delphinium, narcissus, and thyme, among others. You can learn more about Tourism Ireland in The Marketplace (located in Hall C).

If the exhibits at the Flower Show inspire you, consider sitting in on one (or two!) of the many free lectures, sponsored by Monrovia. There’s something for everyone, as topics include flower arranging, container gardening, landscaping, pest control, Ikebana, and growing orchids.

And that’s just the beginning! Authors and experts run the classes, which are suitable for all experience levels--above, plant hunter
Dan Hinkley
describes his adventures discovering new plants. Click here for a full schedule of Show speakers.

The new PHS Village shares with visitors the many facets of the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society. Learn about the Flower Show’s 179-year history and about the transforming work of Philadelphia Green (thanks to support from Bartlett Tree Experts).

Adds PHS Chair Harry Hill, “This really captures what PHS is about. It’s marvelous!”

Flower arrangers teamed up with students from the University of
the Arts
in Philadelphia to create fabulous new designs in the Costume class (pictured above), located in the "Show It" section of Hall B.

In the Pedestals class across the aisle, flower designers Susan Essick, Patti Kelly, and Valerie McLaughlin of Delaware County are seen anxiously awaiting the results of today's judging. Behind them is their spectacular arrangement featuring protea, orchids, and Cornus 'Alba'.

The trio were delighted to later
learn they had won a second-place ribbon. Congratulations!
