Today is "Members' Preview" day at the 2008 Flower Show!

Saturday, March 1, 2008

Psst! Did you know members of the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society (PHS) get to experience the Philadelphia Flower Show a day earlier than the public? It’s true. Better yet, they get to go for free—complimentary tickets are just one of the many perks of a PHS membership. To learn about PHS and its many benefits, visit the Membership Booth when you visit the Flower Show this week. See you there!

Titled "Cool Jazz and Hot Rhythm," the display from Meadowbrook Farm of Abingtown Township, PA, features a series of circular gardens filled with annuals and the gentle sound of a fountain.

Says Meadowbrook manager John Story, "The horticultural palette includes a collection of sub-tropical and tropical plants, such as alocasia (elephant ears), citrus, flowering ginger, Australian tree fern, bananas, Southern magnolia, oleander and palm trees."

Better still, if you see any plants you like at the Flower Show, you can buy them afterwards at Meadowbrook Farm for your very own garden. Click here for more details.

Tranquil fountains, contemporary sculpture and lush foliage abound within the walls of this stunning New Orleans-themed garden. Here, EP Henry presents The Garden Cafe, which also has a balcony and patio set up for musicians to jam all night long. No question, this is a place where the good times roll, or as they say in New Orleans, Laissez les bons temps rouler!"

Waldor Orchids of Linwood, NJ, presents Down on the Bayou. Here, a youngin’ hopes to hook a catfish from the front porch of his shanty. But beware! Lurking among the Spanish moss, orchids, and bromeliads are some hungry alligators also hoping to reel in a big catch. Of course, you see thousands of knockout orchid blossoms here, too, from popular Phalaenopsis to rarer Cattleya and Dendrobium orchids .

The grand finale of the main "themed exhibits" (located as you enter the Show in Hall A) is a contemporary take on New Orleans’ famed French Quarter. Here, courtyards, cast-iron balconies, and fountains capture the festive mood of the Big Easy, as magnolias, oleander, and endless tropical flowers wow the senses.

"Better still, the hanging baskets and planters illustrate how easy it is to recreate this same ambiance at home,” Flower Show design director Sam Lemheney says, as he leans over one of the flower-festooned balconies.
