Orchids, Tubas, and Gardens Galore!

Friday, March 7, 2008

Orchids have a reputation for being difficult to grow, but you'd never guess that based on the exquisite specimens on display here. Visit the Horticulture Classes in Hall B and see the blue-ribbon winners for yourself. And if you like what you see, there are plenty of gorgeous, easy-to-grow orchids available for purchase in The Marketplace, located in nearby Hall C.

Every day, you can hear foot-stomping jazz, funk and blues music at the Flower Show. Here is the crowd-pleasing Big Sam's Funky Nation, blasting out another set of hot rhythm 'n' blues!

The Men’s Garden Club of Philadelphia invites Show visitors to the steamy swamps, where their Juke Joint in the Woods offers refreshing libations and lively tunes. Stan Amey, a founding member of the Club, is excited about the diverse collection of plants, noting "We have a nice display here of dawn redwood, azaleas, cypress knee and, of course, Spanish moss."

“The announcement of the Flower Show jazz theme was made at an exhibitor breakfast and, before I even got up from the table, I’d developed the complete exhibit in my mind. I tried a dozen other things, but I kept coming back to this theme,” shares Bill Schaffer of Schaffer Designs of Philadelphia.

The finished product is a flower-laden nightclub that’s so cool, it’s hot! Pay careful attention to the creative pairing of color, emotion, and quotes from Ella, Dizzy, and other jazz greats.

Having wowed visitors of the 2007 Show, Think Green of Glenside, PA, is back with a bigger and better exhibit. Co-founder Peter Johnson says the intricate display captures the organization’s mission of reusing, reclaiming, and rebuilding. All the materials seen here have been given new life, thanks to this eco-minded garden design.
