Growing the Flower Show!

Wednesday, February 27, 2008

The Philadelphia Flower Show doesn't start until Sunday, but the Pennsylvania Convention Center is already abuzz with landscapers, plants, heavy machinery, and lavish set designs. There are also tons of soft, brown mulch, which is used as the main plant medium throughout the Show.

FUN FACT:
Did you know there’s enough mulch in the Convention Center right now...to fill three Olympic-sized swimming pools?

The connection between color and music inspired Flowers by David to create this genteel garden. David and Robin Heller report that they’re right on schedule and will begin working on their famous flower arrangements in the days ahead.

"We have music staffs that will go around the exhibit and music notes with floral inserts," Robin says. "And I'm really excited to work on the arrangements. We'll be using roses, French tulips, gerber daisies, and calla lilies."

Kepich & Associates of Holicong, PA, bring us Accomplished Harmony. Here you see the bucket-loader still hard at work, but it's now surrounded by sizzling color. This outdoor setting will feature a small pond and patio amidst colorful azaleas, rhododendrons, and an array of perennials and bulbs. Spring at last!

Young people can Jazz It Up! at the Flower Show, too. The exhibit of the Camden Children’s Garden features musical instruments, exercise equipment, and healthy foods that are easy to grow. The garden staff is working with more than 30 Camden teenagers to create this inviting scene.

Here are two gardeners busily working on the display from the US Environmental Protection Agency. Says the EPA's Todd Lutte, "We hope this exhibit will educate Flower Show visitors on the important role of native plants. They’re more resistant to pests and are better equipped for extreme weather. Beyond that, they’re beautiful!”
