The Scent of Beauty

Thursday, March 8 & Friday, March 9

Jacques Amand – the Bulb Specialist always has one of the Philadelphia Flower Show’s most colorful exhibits. Among the many bulbs on display this year are tulips, lilies, and amaryllis, artfully arranged along a garden path for visitors to stroll through.

One visitor named Elizabeth exclaimed, “This has to be my favorite exhibit, if only for the fragrance.” And it’s true: you can enjoy a lovely aroma that lingers long after you leave the garden.

The Grow It section of Hall B is where you’ll find world-class horticulture, all entered in head-to-head competition. Come see who brought home the blue ribbon! “These plants and flowers are of the very highest quality,” added one judge, who was busy evaluating an orchid.

Speaking of orchids, the stunning Cattleya-type orchid pictured here—a variety known as Slc. Hsin Buu Lady ‘YT’—was entered by Bayard Saraduke of the Pinelands Orchid Society. Not only did it win the blue ribbon, but also a special award from the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society for overall excellence. Wow!

This year, Stoney Bank Nurseries presents a “Garden of Gold,” a multi-faceted Ireland-inspired garden designed by Jack Blandy. In addition to the multitude of gold colored species, this exhibit features several PHS Gold Medal Plants, which are a selection of trees, shrubs and vines that grow perfectly in our region.

Think of it as an Irish “pot of gold”…in flowers.

Judy Haffaker and Gabrielle S. Haab of the “Garden Workers” garden club took the blue ribbon in the Hanging Design class, which can be found in the “Show It” section of Hall B.

Featuring an stunning arrangement of Calla lily, Gerbera daisy, and tulips, the judges said, “This arrangement really moves. It has a courageous and imaginative use of line, color and space.”

This year’s Flower Show is teeming with Irish lore, such as the Wishing Tree created by Robertson’s Flowers. Each of the brightly colored cloths that drape this majestic hawthorn tree represents a wish that is seconds away from becoming true.

Look for this festive display in Hall A and drop your own secret wish into the well.
