Members See the Flower Show…for Free!

Saturday, March 3 & Sunday, March 4

Although the Philadelphia Flower Show won’t officially open until Sunday, members of the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society got an exclusive sneak-preview today. What’s more, they often go for free, as most levels of PHS membership offer complementary tickets.

Pictured here are happy members ooh’ing and aah’ing as they entered the Flower Show this afternoon through the colorful Living Wall.

Even if a picture is worth a thousand words, it still can’t do justice to this 8-foot tall fountain in the shape of a Celtic harp. The instrument serves as the centerpiece of the Knot Garden and is flanked by flowers arranged in iconic Irish symbols.

Additionally, fragments of colored glass coat the garden bed, creating what Show Design Director Sam Lemheney calls “an iridescent lighting effect you have to see to believe.”

Who thought the Flower Show could be so…ferocious? These life-like dinosaurs are the same ones used on a promotional tour of the popular Jurassic Park movies and now they’re here at the Pennsylvania Convention Center.

Theresa Rowan of J. Franklin Styer Nurseries says that designing a prehistoric playground for these creatures was a far cry from Styer’s first Philadelphia Flower Show exhibit over 100 years ago. Theresa says, “Back then, it was just an arrangement of mums!”

The “Show It” section of Hall B is home to many of the Flower Show’s “artistic” floral creations, including colorful terraces, entryways, arbors, and containers.

This particular Container Displays entry, put together by the Chester County Art Association, recreates the South Seas bedroom of famed French artist, Paul Gauguin. These Flower Show exhibitors describe it as “a room of untouched nature and floral abundance…inspired by Impressionist paintings.”

Proceeds from the Flower Show go toward Philadelphia Green, the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society’s renowned “urban greening” program. At the PHS Village in Hall B, visitors learn how Philadelphia Green revitalizes city parks, gardens, and many of the city’s tree-lined streets.

Come find out how people just like you can make a difference with gardening!
