An Irish Wonderland…in Philly!

Friday, March 2 & Saturday, March 3

Ten garden professionals from the American Institute of Floral Design (AIFD) have converged on the Pennsylvania Convention Center in order to participate in this year’s Philadelphia Flower Show, which opens to the public this Sunday, March 4.

Here, designer Michael Hasco can be seen assembling his contribution to the AIFD exhibit, which is a modern take on one of Ireland’s finest gardens, Butterstream.

Those who think Ireland is nothing but green are in for a big surprise at the Show. The Spiral Garden is practically bursting with color, as gardeners from Jamie Rothstein Floral Design can be seen arranging a combination of dried and fresh flowers in ancient Celtic patterns.

The Spiral Garden is part of this year’s main exhibit in Hall A, which brings the “Legends of Ireland” to life.

Who says men don’t like pretty flowers? Here are the hardworking fellas of Celtic Gardens, all first-time exhibitors. The stately structure behind them is an ancient Irish chapel, which took three days to build. Designer John Cullen says, “It’s been a lofty endeavor, but the completed garden is going to be great!”

This amazing entry in the Miniature Settings class, called “Irish Roots,” is a detailed depiction of the Irish countryside. Assembling a tiny garden like this requires nimble fingers and sharp mental focus, as creators Melinda Moritz (seen here), Elizabeth McLean, and Midge Ingersoll can testify.

The Miniature Settings display is always a crowd favorite at the Show—look for it in Hall B in the “Show It” section.

The folks at the Camden City Garden Club have outdone themselves again with this year’s display, “A Child’s Imagination: Fairies in the Garden.”

For young folks, the exhibit offers a woven willow tunnel, toadstool house, and interactive elements. Grownups, meanwhile, will appreciate a  sumptuous display of grape hyacinth, daffodils, and tulips.
