How to Build a Flower Show!

Thursday, March 1, 2007

Chris Woods, guest designer at this year’s Philadelphia Flower Show, is seen planting wide ribbons of yellow primrose around the Legends of Ireland exhibit, which he helped design. When asked about the progress of his creation, Chris said, “Everything is going great. And it’s really a thrill to see it all come together.”

A good 15 feet off the Show floor, two brave gardeners from Valley Forge Flowers are planting vibrant red, purple, and pink flowers on top of the Living Wall, which serves as the entrance to the Show. Visitors will pass under the archway and find themselves in an Irish wonderland of flowers, castles, and live entertainment.

Although he may appear lost in the jungle, this gardener is just knee-deep in a bed of lime-green Euphorbia, helping plant Meadowbrook Farm’s interpretation of a traditional Irish garden.

Jessica Story, the head grower at Meadowbrook, says, “Because our exhibit  is a classic Irish ‘walled garden,’ each angle will offer a different perspective. It should be very exciting to view from any direction.”

There’s something in the air during “Set-up Week” at the Flower Show, and that’s the aroma of nutrient-rich mulch. Giant dump trucks drive onto the Show floor to create these veritable mountains of mulch, while skid-steer loaders (pictured here) dispense it to the eagerly awaiting exhibitors.

All week long, big machines like this will be driving around the Pennsylvania Convention Center, helping turn the large, empty space…into the world’s largest indoor Flower Show.

While many of the exhibits are vast and colorful, take the time to notice the small flourishes that sets the Philadelphia Flower Show apart. This diminutive fairy house — complete with a tiny chair in the foreground — was hand-made for this year’s Show. Look for it amidst a sea of daffodils in the Ealain Wood (located in Hall A, just as you enter the Show).
