Flower Show Nurtures $30 Million Economic Impact

The first week of March is a time of local economic growth as the Philadelphia Flower Show attracts more than 250,000 visitors, who generate an overall impact of $30 million for restaurants, hotels, shops, businesses, and cultural attractions in and around Philadelphia.

The Show at the Pennsylvania Convention Center is the largest indoor flower show in the world. Proceeds of the Show, which is produced by the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society, support Philadelphia Green, PHS’ award-winning urban greening program.

“When a visitor buys a ticket, a significant number of them also stay overnight in a hotel, dine in a local restaurant, shop, and attend other cultural attractions according to Show surveys,” said PHS President Jane Pepper.  “People come from all over the world and spread the word about all that Philadelphia has to offer. The ripple effect in terms of promotion of the city is significant.”

In recent years, an average of 250,000 visitors enjoyed the Philadelphia Flower Show. According to survey results, more than 700 bus and tour groups traveled to the Show from as far away as Canada, while 33,000 visitors claimed to have stayed overnight in a Philadelphia area hotel and more than 60 percent dined in a Philadelphia restaurant during their visit.

The Show offers 10 acres of plants, floral designs, landscapes, gardens and garden-related products. Expert lecturers, culinary artists and special events are free with Show admission. Outside of the Convention Center, more than 120 area businesses will offer Show-related discounts and compete in a window-decorating contest during Flower Show Week.

PHS was formed in 1827 and is the nation’s first horticultural society. Proceeds from the Philadelphia Flower Show support the Philadelphia Green program, which has spearheaded the development and ongoing care of hundreds of quality open spaces such as parks, community gardens, and civic landscapes. Philadelphia Green’s transformational work with the city’s abundance of vacant land is providing a solid foundation for building a more sustainable urban landscape.
