2010 Flower Show Pulsates With Brazilian Rhythm,
Bollywood Dance

Musicians and dancers from around the globe will take the stage at the 2010 Philadelphia International Flower Show, Passport to the World.

One of the most sought-after Brazilian bands in the U.S., Minas, which features singers/musicians/composers Patricia King and Orlando Haddad, will bring their evocative brand of bossa nova jazz, sambas and ballads to the “Explorer’s Stage,” the featured area for the Show’s live entertainment. The Philadelphia-based husband-wife duo of Haddad, a native of Minas Gerais in Brazil, and King, from Denver by way of Pennsylvania, have performed at Lincoln Center, Kennedy Center, Mellon Jazz Festival, Academy of Music, and many other local and international venues. Minas will perform several sets each day beginning at 11 a.m.

Evenings will be enlivened by a troupe of Bollywood Dancers led by renowned film, television and stage choreographer Rujuta Vaidya. Ruj, as she is known in India and beyond, choreographed the spectacular Slumdog Millionaire dance sequence presented at the 2009 Academy Awards and has worked with Britney Spears and the Cheetah Girls. At the Flower Show, Ruj will lead a troupe of Bollywood dancers in evening performances from Monday through Saturday.

Celebrated classical Indian dancer Archana Joglekar also will perform. Archana is an accomplished screen and stage performer and the founder-director of a dance academy in New Jersey.

On Members Day, Saturday, Feb. 27, noon to 3:30 p.m., the acoustic instrumental ensemble One will perform. One is a fusion of the ancient and modern, featuring musicians on sitar, sarod, tabla, guitar, djembe, dumbeck, kanjira and drumkit performing original compositions influenced by the classical and folk traditions of India.

Performances on the Explorer’s Stage have been arranged by World Café Live. The entertainment presented at the Preview Reception on Saturday evening, Feb. 27, will be sponsored by Intech Construction.
Families will delight in special events happening throughout Show week in the Family Lounge, located along the concourse leading to the Grand Hall. Fisher-Price is this year’s Lounge sponsor and will provide goodie bags, crafts projects and appearances by costumed characters.

There will be one other colorful group of performers at the Flower Show, in bright yellow, orange, red, blue and green plumage. A flock of sun conures, birds native to the northeastern coast of South America, and other exotic parrots will flutter throughout a rainforest setting under the careful guidance of handlers from the Philadelphia Zoo. The presentation, “Rainbows in Flight,” will take place three times per day in the Brazil exhibit.

The 2010 Philadelphia International Flower Show, which will be held Feb. 28 to March 7 at the Pennsylvania Convention Center, will take visitors on an exotic journey to dozens of destinations around the world.
